Every year, when Aachen is painted in warm colors by the late summer sun, it's time again to open the European arts and crafts market. Designers and craftspersons from all over Europe come together to present their craft under bright canopies. This year is the 34th in a row that around 600 exhibitors packed their tools and products and travelled to Aachen.
It's my duty and my honour as president of the Handwerkskammer Aachen to say thank you to all exhibitors for their enthusiasm and commitment. We shouldn't forget they are the ones who sat the standard for the high quality of the products. They use the European arts and crafts market as an international meeting place, where the newest trends in craft and design are presented and discussed. The success of the market is proved by the greeting "See you next year in Aachen", spoken in different languages on the day of departure.
At last we shouldn't forget to mention the beautiful historic heart of the old town, which provides the backdrop for this highlight of the summer in Aachen.
The interest of a wide audience – every year around a quarter of a million visitors – is another proof of the success of the market. The large number of visitors shows that the market offers the right combination of entertainment and information.
Through the years the European arts and crafts market has gained an international reputation as a meeting place to discuss and exchange ideas about design in craftsmanship. We will do our best to ensure that the market remains a high point in the agenda of the town, both for exhibitors and the public.
And so together with the craftspersons we call out "Bis zum nächsten Jahr in Aachen", "See you next year in Aachen" , "A l'année prochaine à Aix-la-chapelle" ...
